Buyer's guide

Best month to buy a used mower in the UK.

Used UK mower prices swing about 30% across the year. The same Honda HRX that costs £600 in April will sell for £450 in October. Here's why, and how to time the market.

Month-by-month, with notes

January
0.92×
Quiet month. Sellers are clearing space ahead of spring; a few good buys but stock is thin.
February
0.93×
Stock starts to grow. Mowers stored over winter come out for sale once owners notice the daffodils.
March
1.10×
Peak buying season starts. Demand spikes; prices climb 10–15%. The worst time to buy if you can avoid it.
April
1.15×
Peak. Every garden centre is stocked, every Marketplace listing has 30 watchers. Avoid unless you have to.
May
1.10×
Still high. New owners panic-buy after the first cut of the season.
June
1.00×
Demand cools. Prices settle to fair-value range.
July
0.98×
Mid-summer lull. Sellers who haven't shifted their winter listings start to discount.
August
0.95×
First proper bargains start to appear, especially from owners moving house.
September
0.92×
Pre-autumn clearance. Decent stock at decent prices.
October
0.85×
Peak buyer's month. Sellers want the mower out of the shed before winter. Prices drop 15–20% from spring peaks. The single best time to buy used in the UK.
November
0.83×
Even better than October but stock is thinner. If you find what you want, this is the cheapest you'll see it all year.
December
0.88×
Quiet. Few listings, but anything that does appear is from a motivated seller.

How to time it

If you can wait, October is the answer. By Bonfire Night, sellers want their mower in someone else's shed. Marketplace listings sit longer; counteroffers below asking get accepted. The same model that drew six watchers in April will sit unsold for three weeks in November.

If you can't wait until October, the next-best move is opportunistic: keep saved searches running on Facebook Marketplace, eBay UK and Gumtree, and pounce on house-move sellers and probate clearances regardless of the calendar — those are the listings where motivation beats season.

If you have to buy in March or April, expect to pay 15–20% over the year average. Negotiate hard on cosmetic flaws — the seller has dozens of buyers but you have time on your side once you've made the deposit conversation real.
