Our verdict

The bottom line

B&Q's house-brand petrol that does the job for a medium UK lawn at a fair price. The Loncin engine isn't exciting but it starts and runs reliably with annual servicing. Trade up to Mountfield SP46 for £30 more if you want a UK-icon mower that holds resale value.

Pros & cons

Buying second-hand

Used-market tip

£90-160 used. The drive cable is the weak point — if it's stretched, the self-propulsion will be feeble. £18 to replace as DIY. Always check B&Q can still order spares for the model (some Mac Allister generations get end-of-lifed quickly). Avoid examples with cracked deck mounts.

Where to look: Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree are usually 20–30% cheaper than eBay UK for petrol mowers because most sellers want local pickup. eBay tends to win on cordless and electric (lighter, easier to ship). Always insist on a starting demonstration before paying.
