Our verdict
For owners of half-acre lawns who want serious mowing speed without committing to a commercial zero-turn. Kawasaki engine and Kubota frame combine into a machine that comfortably out-cuts any conventional ride-on at the same price. Beginners should test-drive before buying, the dual-lever control takes a Saturday to master.
Pros & cons
Pros
- Cheapest way into a Kubota zero-turn, residential price-point
- Kawasaki FR651V is reliable and serviceable everywhere
- Tight zero-turn radius cuts mowing time roughly in half
- Steel deck and tubular frame, not the cheap stamped builds
Cons
- Side-discharge as standard, mulch kit and collector are extras
- Steeper learning curve than a steering-wheel ride-on
- Petrol zero-turns chew fuel faster than diesel Z-series

Buying second-hand
£1900-3800 used. Kawasaki FR-series hours under 400 are excellent. The single biggest used-market check is the hydro pump bypass levers on the back, owners who used them to push the mower can ruin the pumps, ask before bidding. Deck spindle play is normal under 200 hours, anything over 0.5mm needs new bearings.
