Our verdict
Cub Cadet is MTD's American flagship and the XM1 is a solid wide-cut petrol with one foot in commercial territory. The 53cm deck gets through a lawn fast. If you can find a UK dealer with parts on shelf, it's a credible alternative to Mountfield in this segment.

Buying second-hand
Used £180-320. UK supply is patchy so used examples are often 2-4 years old at most. Check the deck for cracks — the welds on the front deck stiffener are a known stress point. Don't pay over £350 for a used one with no service history.
