Our verdict

The bottom line

The C-series is what British country buyers buy when they don't want a John Deere. The Honda iGX is a notch above the Briggs in the cheaper rivals and the Powered Grass Collector handles wet British grass better than belt-driven competitors. A genuine 15-year machine.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Honda iGX engine — premium
  • British-built at Great Haseley, Oxfordshire
  • Powered Grass Collector is genuinely powerful
  • Cassette system for sweeper or scarifier

Cons

  • £5k+ new is a real commitment
  • Heavy and wide — gates matter

Used-market tip

Used C40s £2200-3500 depending on age and hours. Always check hours on the dash — under 500 is excellent, over 1500 needs a deep service. Look for the original PGC unit (often missing on second-hand sales). Countax dealers will refurbish older units for £600-900 which restores resale value.

Where to look: Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree are usually 20–30% cheaper than eBay UK for petrol mowers because most sellers want local pickup. eBay tends to win on cordless and electric (lighter, easier to ship). Always insist on a starting demonstration before paying.
