How to inspect a used Hayter Harrier 41 / 48 / 56 — UK guide
Hayter Harriers — the 41, 48 and 56 — are British-built premium roller petrols with Honda GCV engines underneath. Built to last 20 years. The catch is that some on Marketplace have done 18 of them already.
Before you go
Bring: spark-plug socket (16mm), a torch.
The Honda GCV is the headline. Confirm cold-start works, then everything else is fixable.
1. Cold-start the Honda GCV
Choke on (older models) or auto-choke (newer). Pull once. The Honda fires on the first pull or the seller has been firing it five minutes before you arrived.
Smoke at start is OK if it clears in 10 seconds. Persistent smoke = top-end wear, walk away unless dirt-cheap.
2. Test the rear roller for stripes
Lift the rear; spin the roller by hand. It should turn smoothly with no clicking or vertical play.
Clicking bearings = £24 OEM bearing kit, £45 dealer fit. Knock £60 off.
Roller surface gouges show up on the lawn as uneven stripes. Cosmetic dings are fine; deep grooves are a no.
3. AD (auto-drive) variant: test the drive
Engage drive on level ground, then on a slope. Should pull cleanly with no clutch slip.
Slipping under load = drive belt or clutch wear. £45 belt, £100 clutch. Knock 20% off if either is bad.
4. Inspect the alloy deck
Hayter alloy decks last 25+ years if not abused. Check for cracks around the wheel mounts and discharge chute.
Cracks radiating from a wheel mount = terminal. Replacement deck is £400+ in parts; not worth fixing.
Welded repairs = walk away. The mower has been bent or driven into something hard.
5. What to pay in 2026
Harrier 41: £350–£500 mid-condition, £550–£750 tidy with documented service.
Harrier 48: £450–£650 mid, £700–£900 tidy.
Harrier 56 AD: £550–£800 mid, £900–£1,200 tidy.
Hayter dealer service stamps add £80-£120 in fair value.
FAQs
Is a Harrier worth more than a Honda HRX?
Roughly equal. The Harrier is British-assembled with a Honda engine; the HRX is Honda-built throughout. Cut quality is identical. Hayter holds slightly higher used value because of the heritage premium and the dealer network.
How long does a Honda GCV in a Harrier last?
1,500-2,000 hours of typical domestic use, which is 20-25 years on a typical UK lawn. The cam belt service at ~1,000 hours is the only major maintenance cost — £35 in parts.
Are spare parts still available for older Harriers?
Yes. Hayter parts continuity goes back 20+ years. Anything broken on a 1990s Harrier can still be ordered through any Hayter dealer.
