How to inspect a used Cobra MX534SPC — UK guide
The Cobra MX534SPC is the larger sibling of the MX46SPB — a 53cm cut, Briggs 750EX engine, rear roller for stripes. The Cobra that handles lawns over 800m² comfortably. Here is the 10-minute used-mower inspection.
Before you go
Bring: spark-plug socket (16mm), a torch.
Insist on a cold start. Briggs 500E carbs varnish fast in spring — a hot mower will hide the problem.
1. Cold-start the Briggs 500E
Three primer-bulb squeezes, full throttle, pull. The 500E fires on the first or second pull cold.
Won't fire after four pulls = stale fuel or varnished carb. £30 carb clean at a dealer or £6 with carb cleaner spray DIY. Knock £30 off.
Primer bulb stays squashed = the bulb has perished. £4 part, 5-minute fix, but flag it on inspection.
2. Check the rear roller
Lift the rear of the mower and spin the roller by hand. It should turn smoothly with no clicking, no notchy feel, and no vertical play.
Clicking bearings = £18 OEM bearing kit, £35 dealer fit. Knock £40 off.
Deep gouges on the roller surface show up on the lawn as uneven stripes. Cosmetic dings are fine.
3. Test the self-propel
Engage the bail-arm and walk the mower onto an incline. Drive should pull cleanly without slipping.
Slipping under load = stretched drive cable. £18 part, 25-minute DIY. Knock £30 off.
4. Inspect the deck and blade
Tilt the mower with the spark plug disconnected. Surface rust is normal; rust-through is walk-away.
Grip the blade and check for play. Vertical wobble means worn spindle bearings — £30 dealer fix.
Check the blade edge — a hand-sharp edge is fine, a chipped or bent blade needs £8 replacement.
5. What it's worth in 2026
2018–2020: £160–£220 in tidy condition.
2021–2023: £230–£310. Less likely to need carb work.
2024–2025: £320–£380. Near-new with possible warranty remaining.
Knock £30 for: cracked primer bulb, stretched drive cable, missing service stamps. Knock £80 for any rust-through or weld repairs.
